Words on my photography

Daniel Lucena

Eduardo’s work reflects the soul of the retina and the clarity of the lens. He photographs with his heart. He has the simplicity of an old-fashioned street photographer, the precision of an eagle’s eye and a judicious sense of balance. It is the pure translation of beauty onto the white paper of life.

My friendship with Eduardo Trauer goes back a long way. He was the guy I would meet in the street who would always ask me about Expresso Rural. So it was no surprise when, during our performance at the CIC in 2007, I spotted him in the audience. But something caught my attention. He had a camera with an enormous lens that stood out even from the stage.

That year, photography was merely a hobby for Eduardo. But when he showed me the photographs, curiosity turned into surprise, and over the years that surprise became admiration. Edu does not take photographs; he captures moments. His images have life, emotion, feeling… there is always something behind each photograph. It might simply be a boot, a handshake or the neck of a guitar, but they say much more than that. They leap from the paper, the screen, the monitor.

What began as a passion and merely a hobby, I believe he now approaches as a profession — which is how I think he should express all his talent. From then on, he was there at every show… photographing everything and everyone. And they are always moments. Incredible as it may seem, in all those years of performances he was the only photographer who never took a photograph of the whole band. That is what sets him apart… he does not need to. He is a photographer of details, and those details make him my favourite photographer.

Years later, the best photographs were brought together in an exhibition he funded and worked tirelessly to create: ‘Harmonia’. Harmony is everything he has captured for us as a group. This was, and remains, the greatest tribute the band could have received in all those years. If he is a fan of the band, we can say the feeling is mutual. I am — and we are — fans of this wonderful person and professional. Eduardo Trauer, who in brief seconds has the ability to capture great details.

Eduardo Trauer has been contributing to our musical community by giving us images and perspectives that go beyond what the audience sees, revealing details and colours that bring out the imagination and the whole dream of making a living through music.

When I compose a song, an image first forms in my mind, like a photograph or a film. That is how “inspiration” comes to me. When I composed the songs for my album Central Station, I tried to translate those images into songs. When the time came to prepare photographs for the cover, promotional material and visuals for the launch concert, Edu understood my music so well that he managed to translate it back into images.

He captured my original inspiration and went further: he added new colours, shadows and nuances that made my music a richer, more complete art form — a feast for the eyes and ears. That ability to capture unique moments, that sensitivity to perceive what others merely see, is a special talent, and Eduardo has been blessed with it. Our partnership was one of the best professional collaborations I have experienced in twenty years of my career.

I have been following Eduardo Trauer’s photographic work for about sixteen years, since 2010, across a wide range of subjects: music, the arts, landscapes from around the world and people’s everyday lives. Eduardo’s photographs led me to pay closer attention to details and become more discerning about the photographs I encountered. That was when I realised how distinctive his work is. I know no one who takes photographs as wonderful as Eduardo’s.

His images reveal things that even those present in the scene do not notice, offering such a detailed and harmonious perspective that they truly impress me. I have been an absolute fan for some time and have had the privilege of commissioning him to photograph my wife’s pregnancy and performances by CODA and Brazilian Pink Floyd, the bands I play in. They are incredible photographs that I could never have taken myself.

My wife also attended his course on creativity and ways of seeing in photography, which greatly developed her photographic perception. I recommend that everyone who enjoys photography follow the wonderful work Eduardo has been doing.

Dear Trauer, your photographs are works of art… It is such a pleasure to see the results of your work. Your sensitivity and the care you take with details when composing your photographs are admirable. Thank you for preserving, in such a special way, unique moments I have experienced on stage! A big hug, and wishing you every success, my dear friend!

“Who is this photographer who smiles as he takes photographs?”

That was the question I heard most often at my wedding! Unsurprised, I would reply: “He is my dear friend and photographer Eduardo Trauer. As well as being an excellent professional, he loves what he does.”

Eduardo has an incredible sensitivity; he sees with his heart, and that is why his photographs convey the full beauty of reality! The smallest details are appreciated and revealed.

Late in my pregnancy, we also had an incredible photo session, carried out with so much love! Everything felt so natural, so enjoyable!. Life portrayed through the hands of this exceptional photographer is simply art, a gift for a lifetime!

As well as being an accomplished photographer with a unique talent for capturing beautiful images, my friend Eduardo Trauer has an exceptional gift for image editing: he brings out less obvious details, giving each photograph a distinctive signature… The result is fantastic!

Eduardo Trauer has an undeniable talent, capturing the essence and physical expression of each artist performing at the Jurerê Jazz Festival and conveying that human warmth through images of unique moments. I feel honoured by these wonderful photographs and offer my thanks on behalf of all the musicians who have been part of this journey. Thank you — you are a truly gifted artist!

I know no better definition of the word art than this: Art is man added to nature; to nature, to reality, to truth, but with meaning, with a conception, with a character that the artist emphasises, and to which he gives expression, rescues, distinguishes, liberates, illuminates.
